Portland Publilc Library, 5 Monuent Square, Will be the Site of the Discussion on Coastal Flooding,  June 12th.

You are invited to attend a discussion of the science behind sea level rise, projections for Maine and the local impacts of tidal and storm-related flooding on Thursday, June 12th   The discussion runs from 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm in connection with the current exhibit “Washed Away” at the Portland Public Library. The current exhibit “Washed Away”  hosted by the Union of Mane Visual Arts (UMVA), runs through June 21st.

Join Gayle Bowness, Municipal Climate Action Progrm Manager and Evan Paris, Resilience Fellow, both of the Gulf of Maine Research Institute, on the Portland waterfront.

With over 5,000 miles of tidally influenced coastline, Maine’s coastel communities face unique challenges in addressing the impacts of climate change,” said Bowness, “especially flooding from sea level rise and storms.  Building understanding of local flood impacts today is essential to help us plan and take action against future flooding.  Documenting water levels, sharing observations, telling stories and creating art are some of the ways that we can build that collective knowledge.

The UMVA exhibit features art inspired by not just coastal flooding, but the ways in which communities are responding.  For more information on this important exhibit at the Portland Public Library, please visit post herein dated April 26, 2025.  The art exhibit at the Library opened May 2, 205.

  1. It was a pleasure to meet you today at Hanniford’s, and thank you for introducing me to your Blog and Podcast! I mentioned that we live in the Old Port, and transplants from Napa California since 2020, but we’re always interested in news and issues that may affect our friends and neighbors in the Munjoy neighborhoods.

    • David, likewise it was a pleasure to meet you today as well. There is a lot going on in the area and I try to cover as much as this “old person” can! Did you hear that California has sued Trump over bringing in the National Guard to LA? Carol
