The public is invited to take two free tours coming up next week – Clean Water Week. There are two separate tours of the same premises on each day.
The first tour takes place on Wednesday, June 6th of Portland’s largest pump station, Northeast Pump Station. The tour takes place from 4:30 pm. There is a second tour the same day that begins at 5:30 pm. It is one of 76 pump stations operated by the Portland Water District. The Northeast Pump Station was recently retrofitted with advanced odor control systems. The facility is located at the end of Marginal Way under Tukey’s Bridge, Portland. The second free public tour is of the East End Wastewater Treatment Facility on Thursday, June 7th. starting at 4:30 pm. A second tour of the same Facility starts at 5:30 pm the same day. The waste water plant receives and treats roughly 20 million gallons of wastewater a day. By touring the plant, you’ll see what it takes to keep this facility working properly no matter what comes down the pipe. Operators work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to prevent over 8 million pounds of pollution from entering Casco Bay each year. Explore the treatment plant, including the most recent $12 million project to upgrade the aeration system and protect Casco Bay! The facility is located at the end of Marginal Way, under Tukey’s Bridge.
