An information sheet announcing the controversial rate increase for the Casco Bay Lines reveals that the hike takes place as of June 1, 2024. The rate hike is $14. and effective for one round trip for SIXTY days.
According to sources familiar with the situation, that announced rate hike remains in limbo. According to one source several days ago, someone has filed a lawsuit against the city of Portland. “The city is trying to decide how to proceed,” said this source. A secomd source from late last week said that the Public Utillities Commission (PUC) is required to sign off on the rate hike and it has yet to do so. “That board is in dreamland,” said one of the sources.
“If you intend to visit Peaks Island this season, I suggest you do it before the rate hike balloons up to $14.” said this blogger. A telephone inquiry to the Casco Bay Lines recently went unanswered. The news of the rate hike was first reported in the March 15, 2024 issue of the “Peaks Island News.”
5/13/24 – The city’s spokeswoman responded this morning that she has no information on the subject since it is not in the city’s jurisdiction.
