Consider yourself fortunate to have an opportunity to view the oil paintings of New York City artist Frances Hynes at the Moss Galleries, 100 Fore Street on Munjoy Hill.  The name of the show is Celestial Blue.

The show opened in mid-April  and runs through Friday, June 7, 2024. A closing reception will be held that day from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm, although there was no grand opening for the show last month.  It is the artist’s intention to attend the closing reception next month.

“The work alludes to landscape and seascape, weather and atmosphere, transtions of dawn and dusk, the moon planets and stars.  Our human presence in all this is suggested in marks and hidden imagery often at the edges of the canvas.  The edges of the canvas are important and reveal the history of the painting, which is created over a span of time by additions, subtractions and layering of color, marks, images and lines,” Ms. Hynes says in part in her mission statemen available at the Moss Galleries on the Hill.

A resident of Queens, New York, Hynes spends much of her summers in the Pemaquid area.  Hence, that area of the coast including the  landmark lighthouse is the subject of many of her landscape paintings.

Hynes has a long exhibition history dating back to 1974, including shows at the Moss Galleries, Falmouth.  She received an MA from New York University and a BA from St. Johns University.  She also studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, Italy.
