blue Governors Who are Members of the “”Governors for Safeguarding ‘Democracy” At Far Right is Governor, of Illinois, J. B. Pritzker who Co-Founded the Nonprofit Aong With Colorado’s Governor Polis.

Wealhy Governor J.B. Pritzker, D), is a co-founder of “Governors Safeguarding Democracy” with Colorado’s Governor Jared Polis (D).

President-elect Trump announced early this moring that he will declare  a national emergency and use the US military to assist in the mass deportation of  eleven (11) million  immigrants on the first day of his administration on January 20, 2025.

Critics of Trump’s mass deportation have said that it would devastate the economy and cause a huge spike  in the cost of food.  That would increase prices at grocery stores, fast food venues as well as in the restaurant industry..  The latter is already suffering from the high cost of food and a shortage of workers. That combination has forced a number of small busiesses to shutter their doors in recent months.  It leaves some wondering if the restaurant bubble in Port;land has burst or at least is shrinking.

Other critics have stated that such a plan would require far more personnel than available to carry out such a deportation,   The cost  would be too excessive to implement others maintain, although Trump has said that money is no object in this project.

Numerous phone calls to the Maine Army National Guard, in Augusta, from this blogger went unanswered today. The question posed on multiple answering services of multiple departments of the Maine Army National Guard was: Would the Guard comply or not comply with the President’s order that it participate in a mass deportation effort should he implement it next year?    Would the Guard fight against its own residents?  The silence speaks volumes..

Wealthy Governor J.B. Pritzker, (D-Ill) and Governor Jared Polis (D-CO) have founded a bipartisan coalition of fellow state-level executives to resist increasing threats of autocracy and potential power grabs by Donald Trump. “Governors Safeguarding Democracy” (GSD) will harness the collective powers to “catalyze collaborataives across state lines.”  GSD  participants will “discuss a range of options, including safeguarding state-level environmental protection ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, and shielding immigrants from mass deportation.”

Governor Pritzker pledged to form a response to proposals like Trump’s advisor Stephen Miller’s proposal to send red state National Guard units to blue states to assist in the deportation.   When asked about a list of participating governors in the coalition, Governor Pritzker said that some do not want to be named publicly.  Despite multiple inquiries to Governor MIlls’ office last week, her spokesmen would not comment on wheter or not she is a member of the Blue Governors’ coalition = GSD.

In 2019, Governor Pritzker signed an executive order expanding access to Illinois Welcome Centers for immigrants and refugees.  Those Welcome Centers help guide immigrants on a path to citizenship. and refugees with access to health care, education, jobs and legal services according to his webpage.  Importantly, that same year the Governor signed a bill banning the operation of private immigration detention centers in Illinois.  Another bill forbids state and local police to cooperate with US Immmigration Customs and Enforcement officials (ICE) to deport illegal immigrants.

If the topic of mass deportation and the Portland Police Department’s assistance in it comes up, we will consider it at that time said a spokesman for the Department last week.

  1. Great column Carol. This situation seems like it might really escalate. When I read the S Miller comment, I started thinking about our last Civil War. Quite frightening – thank you for helping people get informed. There is too much attention given to the Yes-men he is putting in his cabinet than to the upcoming violence that is about to ascend on Portland, on Maine, and the whole USA.

    • thanks very much Peter for your comment. I’m retired and so have more time than many to track this stuff. Also, used to work in DC for a US Senator so I’m “addicted” to this stuff. Carol

      • P.S. Peter, you comment reminded me also of the Civil War as well although I hadn’t thought of it until you mentioned it. It does look like it is esalating, unfortunaely. Carol
