“It’s always been a show of high-quality gifts geared toward the holiday season,” said Elizabeth Fraser, an organizer of the 20 plus year old Art on the Hill show this afternoon. “People come from all over southern Maine to do some of their gift shopping for this holiday season,” she said. For the past dozen years or so, the event has been staged by an event planner. This year there are over 70 vendors in the show at the East End Commuity School, 195 North Street on Munjoy Hill. Elizabeth is an artist who lives on Munjoy Hill. A selfl-taught artist she paints waterfront landscapes as well as life-like pet portraits for which she is well known in the area. www,frazerartiststudio.com/
“There has been a lot of traffic today,” said a pleased Paula Ashton, whose vendor booth is near the entrance to the show, on the right. Paula was experiencing good sales of her warm mittens at moderate prices, impressing this blogger, a customer. Her warmest mittens this blogger has ever seen come in three sizes and sell for $30. a pair. Paula has been a vendor at the annual show for the last ten years.
The artwork of Julie Bernier is another of my personal favorites in the show. Her artwork is hard to resist. So this blogger didn’t try to do that. This blogger purchased a painting of the Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse Station for $95. Julie’s focus is on colorful renderings of the waterfront – from lighthouses to sea gulls, lobster buoys and more. There is nothing abstract about her artwork which has a large appeal to this blogger. Her booth was busy today and with good reason. Julie is a self-taught artist who lives in South Portland. She has worked in mixed media and acrylics for 12 years. Making art is therapeutic for her. She assists her husband with special projects in his home renovation business. Visit Julie at the Art on the Hill tomorrow Sunday, December 7th for a truly delightful gift for someone who doesn’t have it all – not yet!
One of the many positiives of this show is that there is a variety of items – from Lacey Pots, to appealing all white dishware, to lampshades and jewelry – surely something for everyone on your gift list – includig yourself most of all!
“Tomorrow the Pats aren’t playing as they have the week off. So, there’s no good reason not to attend the Art on the Hill,” said this Left Wing Lunatic.
The Art on the Hill opened on Friday, December 5th and runs through Sunday, December 7th from 11:00 am – 4:00 pm a East End Commuity School on Munjoy Hill.
