You are invited to share a major milestone with Marine Mammals of Maine tomorrow Wednesday, November 26, 2025 in Phippsburg. That is when Seal Number 269 will be released at Head Beach, Phippsburg, at 11:30 am sharp. This release is especially significant because it represents the 100th seal release by the team since establishing a triage and rehabilitation center.
Some background on Seal Number 269 is that he is a harbor seal that was reported to the Hotline in early September. He was in a difficult spot on the Mousam River in Kennebunk. Identifying his need for immediate critical care was not the difficult part. Kenneling him, scaling a steep embankment with the kennel and hiking through the woods proved difficult.
His reovery has also been difficult, presenting many challenges from healing complicated wounds to a stubborn respiratory infection, to regaining use of his injured flippers. This process has entailed injections, x-rays, wound cultures, medicated baths, exams and physica therapay to name just a few of this tough little seal’s treatments.
Wounds on his face, mouth and adomen have now flly healed and his respiratory infection has resolved as well. He’s eating lots of fish and he’s ready to return to the wild!
If you can join the release in Phippsburg, please remember that it’s important that all guests on the bech minimize their impact by respecting taped off boundaries and using quiet voices. The release site is a private beach generously opened to MMoME and the public, so please be respectful of the parking areas, paths and the beach. It may take him a moment to exit the kennel, be patient, and respect crowd barriers. Thank you to the Wyman family for sharing the beach for a public release.
