“Whole Foods Market ranked third on the US Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) list of 50 green power partners using the most renewable electricity,” announced “Sustainable Food News,” the on-line newsletter for the organic, sustainable and natural food industries.
EPA’s Green Power Partnership works with more than 1,2000 partner organizations tovoluntarily purchase green power to reduce the environmental impacts of conventional electricity use. Other food companies in the top 50 include: Wal-Mart Stores, Inc at # 12. Intel Corp. remains the partnership’s largest single purchaserof green power. Green power is generated from renewable resoucres such as solar, wind, geothermal, biomass, biogas and low-impact hydropower.
“EPA’s Green Power Partnership works with more than 1,200 partner organizations to voluntarily purchase green power to reduce the environmental impacts of conventional electricity use,” the newsletter went on to say yesterday.
On another Whole Foods Market item, the popular organic tea, Kombucha, has been returned to many of its shelves in the US.
On June 17, Vibranz, the California based maker of this probiotic beverage removed it from shelves becuase it needed to reformulate the product line to meet FDA guidelines for alcohol content.
Proponents claim Kombucha aids cancer recover, increases, shaprents eyesight, aids joint recovery and provides numerous other benefits to humans. However, there is lilmited scientific information supporting any health benefit and most claims are largely unverified or subjective,” announced the “Sustainable Food News,” in a press release issued August 4th.
However, the bad news is that Portland was not listed as one of the numerous cities, mostly in the west and mid-west, that has been returned to Whole Foods Market shelves. The closest city to Portland that has restocked Kombucha on its Whole Foods shelves is New York City.
