Victim of Ellsworth Fire Earlier This Week Perishes Due to Injuries

Bruce Spencer, 59, of Ellsworth, has died as a result of injuries sustained in the fire that occurred on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, in Ellsworth according to a press release received late this afternoon from Shannon Moss, Public Information Officer, for the Maine Depatment of Public Safety, Augusta.

By way of background, on Tuesday, July 14, 2026 at approximately 3:00 pm., emergency responders were dispached to 253 North Street in Ellsworth for a reported propane explosion involving a bus that had been converted into a recreational vehicle.

The preliminary investigation determined the explosion originated in a cabinet beneath the propane range.  Investigators determined the most likely ignition source was the electric compressor  of a nearby refrigerator.  The exact source of the propane leak could not be identified.  The RV was supplied by two 25-pound propane cylinders located in a rear exterior compartment.  The sole occupant sustained serious burns and was transported to Northern Light Maine Coast Hosital,.

The incident remains under investigation.  No additional information is available at this time.
