If you are one of the many in the area looking for the hard to find but necessary toilet paper: take heart.
The 7-Eleven convenience store, 27 Washington Avenue, has restocked its inventory of the precious commodity – just this morning. There is no limit to how many rolls a customer may purchase. Each roll costs $1.49, before taxes.
Another item in short supply is hand sanitizer. Big box stores are out of it because people are using it as a safeguard against the spread of COVID-19 along with social distancing and staying home. Purell, a hand sanitizing manufacturer, is far behind in filling its orders. Because Hardshore has one of the only stills in Maine that can produce alcohol above 92%, Hardshore has been tapped for production to help supply hospitals desperately in need of it during this pandemic.
That’s okay since the demand for the popular Hardshore gin has diminished with the closure of bars and restaurants. However, Hardshore Gin can be purchased at Hannaford Brothers, Shaw’s, Bow Street Market, RSVP and Old Port Spirits on Commercial Street, for example.
Tristen Walden, Production Scheduling Supervisor, is preparing to ship Hardshore’s fourth order to the University of Maine, Orono. That’s where the lab formulates the ethanol and adds product to turn it into a hand sanitizer to be sold to hospitals all over Maine. About three weeks ago, the first several barrels with 55 gallon drums of 70% alcohol were sent to Orono. More recently, Walden oversaw the production of three 55 gallon barrels that were shipped to Orono. Two more barrels were sent last week. And Walden is hoping to get another shipment of three barrels of ethanol to Orono next week.”We are shipping as much as we can send them,” said Walden who is working many hours a week to fill both the University of Maine, Orono orders and the community orders.
Hardshore, whose CEO and founder is Jordan Milne, is now selling the hand sanitizer to the community. “We are diluting it here to 70% for the community,” said Walden who has worked for Milne for over three years. While this blogger was there on several occasions, customers were constantly driving up to the Washington Avenue site to pick up their “curbside only” orders. Milne went overseas years ago to order special bottles to hold his award winning gin. However, he has not had that luxury of time for his four ounce community hand sanitizer bottles. Milne had to do some searching to locate both caps and battles for the community hand sanitizers. The caps and bottles come from different distributors and the labels were originally created by Express Copy, although those issues have been resolved. The cost is just under $5.00 per 4 ounce bottle. It’s important to call ahead for curbside pickup, although one customer drove up without ordering ahead. He left with five bottles of the precious gold.

When asked if Hardshore is the new Purell Hand Sanitizing Co., Jordan Milne laughed and answered: “I guess for the time being.”
