You are invited to participate in the Third Annual “Walking Conversations” on Saturday, May 4th. Communities around Maine will hold free, volunteer-led walking conversatdions emphasizing the power of individuals to influence the places they live and the participating planning approaches that have helped people connect, suppofrt each other and iprove a sense of shared identity. Close to 50 walks are planned in 35 cities and towns across the state – from York to Van Buren representing all of Maine’s 16 counties according to a press release issued today by Maine Preservation, Yarmouth.
“Jane’s Walk” is inspired by communiy activist Jane Jacobs who spent her life (1916-2006) using grassroots advocacy to protect neighborhoods from urban renewal, emphasizing the power of individuals to influence the places they live. Today, her principles represent the participating planning approaches that have been enhanced in communities around the world. Jacobs is the author of the classic book – “The Death ad Life of Great American Cities,” that was published in 1961.
Walks are typically 60 – 90 minutes and open to the public. The walk in Portland is: “Misery Loves Company Navigating a Car-centric Environment,
