That was because of the regressive attitude toward women promoted by the arcane rules of the Church of the Latter Day Saints who controlled the city. Women who were not married and particularly those without children were outcasts within their own religious community. “Stay home and produce children to grow the church” was the mantra of the male leaders of The Church. :”Stay in the kitchen and make your husband happy.” Strikingly, there was no corresponding code for how men should treat their wives. Vance’s attitude toward women is hauntingly reminiscent of those breeder attitudes promulagated by The Church. The LDS Church is active in numerous cities in Ohio from where Vance hails.
