Sun Life US announced yesterday that it has signed a lease with Portland Foreside to occupy a new building along the waterfront that will break ground in early 2020.  The new state-of-the art high tech space will become the hub for Sun Life in Northern New England.

Its current  Scarborough and South Portland based workforce will be relocated here with occupancy expected in 2022.  That means about 500 employees will be based herein.

Development in this location has been one of the locations that lobsterman have expressed concern about because of the increased traffic to the area. Bruce Hyman, Transportation Manager for the city of Portland, was out of the office and unavailable to comment on what impact this development might have on the waterfront area.

Previously this almost ten acres of property was known as the now defunct Portland Co., once a major industrial complex in the area  The sale of the waterfront property to the developers was a source of a contentious battle fought at city hall as well as at the ballot box – a fight that the NIMBYs on the Hill lost even on the Hill.  The NIMBY’s of the Hill had no Plan B to present to the city – except for zoning challenges.
