Special Counsel Jack Smith at Brief Press Conference Today at His Office.

Special Counsel Jack Smith held a brief and “crisp” press conference this afternoon on the indictment of Donald J. Trump that was filed yesterday afternoon in Florida rather than in Washington, DC.  The press conference lasted  two minutes and the Special Counsel took no questions following the event.

Smith urged the public to read the 49-page indictent and did not go into a description of the document in this public forum.  However, prior to the press conference cable news pundits who had read the document said the indictment revealed that Trump had hidden portions of the classified documents that he illegally held in his Florida estate in a bathroom, shower and in a ballroom.  Accounts from cable news anchors also stated that Trump was personally involved in packing boxes that held classified documents.  Trump showed the classified documents to people without security clearances and tried to hide classified material from his own lawyers and investigators. Do you think he showed these classified documents to Saudi Arabians in exchange for funds to his son-in-law??

Trump was charged with 37 felony charges, including 31 under the Espionage Act.  If convicted, they carry stiff prison sentences.  Trump is to report to federal court in Florida Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 pm.  Smith said there would be  a speedy trial.

Following the press conference US Rep. Adam Schiff, (D) of California called the indictment “stunning, ”  The indictment has been called “thorough” and “profound” as well as a “speaking indictment” rather than a bare bones document which is the norm in similar circumstances.

The press conference was held at Smith’s office rather than the DOJ office as an indication of  Smth’s independence from DOJ and any claims of politics from Trump’s  Congressional and other allies.  Previously Smith served as Chief Prosecutor at The Hague.
