Site Work Starts Today at Roux Institute; September 10th Next Community Meeting

Formerly the Site for the  B&M Baked Beans Factory, it is Now the Site for the Roux Institute at the Boston Based Northeastern University.

Starting today, Wednesday, August 14th, vegetative cleanup and erosion control measures are taking place onsite at 1 Beanpot Circle, Portland. the location of the new Roux Campus at Northeastern University.  Trailers will be installed for use as office space for the duraation of construction.  Later this month, utility work and excavation for site grading will begin.

The next neighborhood meeting is scheduled for September 10th from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm. It will be held at the Washington Gardens Community Center (corner of Churchill Street at Pembroke Street).

The developers look forward to introducing the construction team and providing an overiew of the entire project, including communication with neighbors over the next three + years.  In addition, construction plans will be presented along with new developments regarding site access facilitated by the RAISE grant.

The RAISE grant is a $25 million federal grant that will pay for construction of a new interstate 295 offramp, a pedestrian and bike bridge and other projects intended to improve access to  the Roux Institute campus in Portland’s East Deering neighborhood.  The new offramp at exit 8 on 1-295 will allow for direct access to Roux via Sherwood Street and direct traffic away from other neighborhood streets.

The plan also includes a pedestrian and bike bridge that would run parallel to Tukey’s Bridge and connect the Portland peninsula and Eat Deering.   DOT and the city also plan to extend the Back Cove trail so it connects to the new pathway bridge.

DOT expects construction will begin around 2028 and end aroud 2031.  The Roux Institute is slated to open in 2027.
