For many years now, people from the Portland area have been purchasing flowers and fresh vegetables from the vendors who sell their products every year at the outdoor Portland Public Market in Monument Square.
Today that rite of spring continued when Carolyn Snell, of the Snell Family Farm, (Buxton), arrived at the market with stunning daffodils, lilacs and seedlings for those anxious for this tradition to start up again. Carolyn is the fourth generation in her family’s business and this is her tenth year working at the popular outdoor market.
She took a break to study writing and painting at the College of the Atlantic, but learned “how much I like farming. I was lucky to grow up on a farm” she said early this afternoon as the family was packing up after the first day at the Market.
The Snell Family will be at their market spot every Wednesday from 7 am to 2 pm until Thanksgiving. The farm is a “diverse retail family farm” selling annuals, perennials, fresh vegetables and special products in the fall.
