“Senator Collins must demand a fair impeachment trial and get the facts available to the Senate for the upcoming trial of President Trump. It is the Senate’s job to hold Trump accountable for his illegal actions,” said a coalition of fourteen Maine non-profit organizations in a press release issued this morning.
To protect our democracy and our constitution, Trump must be held accountable for putting our democracy at risk. By silently sitting by as Trump abuses his power and breaks the law, Collins isn’t representing Maine’s basic values and she empowers the President to believe he is above the law.
Senator Collins has met with the President about the impeachment trial, and she has accepted his help raising money for her re-election campaign, but back at home she has consistently ignored her constituents, refusing to hear their concerns about impeachment or any other matter facing this Congres, our state and our country.
Senator Collins: we expect you to uphold your oath to protect the Constitution of the US. You shouldn’t help Trump succeed in hiding crucial evidence and testimony. A trial has witnesses or depositions; this is not negotiable and it is outrageous that we are begging and organizing so that a fair trial occurs in the Senate. The impeachment and the removal of a President is not a partisan issue. It is a constitutional duty. We expect you to do your job.
The country needs a leader, but Senator Collins continues to only play the role of politician. We call on Senator Collins to vote for a fair trial.that includes witnesses, includes vital evidence and lifts the White House gag order on key witnesses,” according to the same press release.
Senator No-Show’s wishy washy statement that she is “open” to witnesses at the upcoming Senate trial did nothing more than strengthen her link to the Trump legacy of his war on women, immigrants, health care and the environment. What a record for an “independent” Mainer.”
“We expect Senator Collins to support a full, fair trial. That means calling for all testimony, demanding the White House release all phone and message transcripts, now being withheld and the appearance of all relevant witnesses, including Bolton, Mulvaney, Blair and Duffy. Anything less from her is political cowardice and a shrinking of her responsibility to preserve the constitution,” wrote Gordon Adams, co-director of Mainers for Accountable Leadership, PAC, in the same press release.
On another note, “The New York Times, in a timely editorial page editorial written by Nancy L. Cohen on January 1, 2019, wrote that female GOP politicians are a vanishing breed. Cohen noted that “Republican men don’t vote for women and women shun Republicans” – “To survive, most Republican women have tethered themselves to President Trump. Senator Collins, a onetime moderate with a bipartisan record, provided the deciding vote to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.”
Collins supported Trump’s tax plan that favored big corporations rather than the little business guy struggling to stay afloat. She will face Maine voters in 2020 as the nation’s second-most unpopular senator.”
The most unpopular Senator, of course, is Senator Mitch McConnell (R-). What company Senator No-Show keeps: The darling of the “Republican Press Herald.”
