Roustabout, an Italian-American inspired restaurant, opened late last year.  The word on the street is that the food is outstanding there.  Just recently it opened for lunch, so this blogger decided to head down there yesterday. This blogger is not a food critic, but does know an exceptional sandwich  when presented with one!  This is just that. Roustabout, 59 Washington Avenue, is located in the former J. J. Nissan Building on Munjoy Hill.

The knife in the middle of the sandwich – that was the tip-off.  This was something special!  It was necessary to cut the sandwich in half though. Everything  in the sandwich is made in-house said my great waiter.  The pickles, potato chips, and bread. All in-house. The chicken is not, thank heavens!  The succulent chicken has a light and thin outer fried coating which accounts for the “crispy” in its name.  The owners just recently added it to the lunch menu and it is very popular – maybe signature is premature – but this blogger likes that designation, so I’ll use it!  Keegan Curtin, a bartender elsewhere in Portland said the crispy chicken sandwich was a great lunch.  “Dan makes a mean Manhattan,” as well Curtin said.  “They pair perfectly together.”

Kate Johnson, also a Hill resident, enjoyed the above Chopped Salad.  “This is a great neighborhood spot.” she said. Johnson eats there frequently.

Kate’s right!
