Demonizing the Taliban was easy for many who spoke at an hour long rally this afternoon at Monument Square – because most of them are from Afghanistan and have many close relatives still living in Kabul with whom they are in close contact every day.  They have all either  experienced Taliban cruelty or have knowledge of it.

The focus was on the Taliban, but there were a few harsh words for the United States as well.    “The world failed Afghanistan.  The US failed Afghanistan with its irresponsible exit,” said one speaker.

“The US has given our country to the Taliban.  This is the second  time the US has turned its back on us,” said Rahmatullch Habibza.  He has been in this country since 1988. and works as a Transportation Director for a local news company.

In between speakers, there were prayers and chants offered in a blend of several dialects. They included Dari, Arabic and Farsi according to someone  familiar with them.  GO HOME, TALIBAN.  GO HOME, TALIBAN, was one of the chants repeated throughout the rally.

A brave young lady who grew up in Afghanistan captured the hearts of the crowd when she told her gut wrenching story: She misses her father who remains in Kabul.  He cannot get to the airport because he is afraid the Taliban will arrest him.  “I miss him,” she said getting emotional.  “We need help.  We need help,” repeated her mother in an appeal on behalf of her husband separated from him because of the Taliban.  There are roughly 70 families from Afghanistan living in Portland.

“We are not angry because the US pulled out on us.  We are mad because they left us alone with no support,” said Farhat Shaled.

“Where are the leaders of the Taliban?  Where are they?  They are in Pakistan,” said Sami Shahed, a native of Kabul.  Seven thousand members of Al -qeada and ISIS were recently released from the jails when the Taliban took over he said.  They will be sent to Pakistan to be educated in their training camps.  Then they will be returned to Afghanistan.  “We don’t want another 9/11,” he said.  (See above right photo of Shahed)

The rally ended with the hoisting of the nation’s flag.  “We have a flag.  We don’t need another flag. We don’ t need the Taliban flag.  We need peace in our country.”
