Dyane Lacerda, Was Extremely Enthusiastic About the High Level of Heat in Sauna Vanya This Afternoon. It Helps a Medical Condition She Has.

“We’ve been working on this idea for some time now,” said Courtney Walker, executive director of the Friends of Eastern Prom this afternoon. She was referring to the novel Sauna Pop-up event at the East End Beach parking lot on Munjoy Hill.  which is also a fundraiser for the non-profit.

From noon to 4:00 pm., those using the two saunas were by appointment only.  From 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm., drop-ins are welcome.

One of those with an appointment early this afternoon was Dyane Lacerda.  Dyane said:  “There is a lack of a sauna culture in Portland,so it’s great this pop-up is happening.  She said it’s the first time she has used this group, but not the first time she has used  a sauna.  She finds it relieves some of the chronic pain in her chest.  Currently, she goes to an unnamed gym sauna  that doesn’t get hot enough to help her pain.  “It’s worth the drive from my home in Berwick to do this,” she said.

According to Nick Rosen, owner of the mobile Sauna Vanya, a sauna is good for ones circulation.  “It helps speed up a variety of medical conditions.  It works for inflamations and skin conditions.  It puts your head in a different space,” he said.  His sauna was at 188 degrees today.  He promotes his sauna as holding 6 – 7 people simultaneously, but 8 people is possible.

Hannah Hamalainen, of Little Red Sauna, formerly part of a horse trailer, said there have always been saunas in Maine.  “They are just hidden in back yards.”  She normally rents to people for use at their homes.  People are using rental saunas more and more for weddings, birthday parties and anniversaries.  They are used round-year and are popular because they bring people together, she said.  She prefers a sauna temperature of 220 degrees, although hers wasn’t that hot today.

Hannah’s sauna is five months old and Nick’s is two months old.

Walker succeeds Patsy Wiggins who succeeded Diane Davison as Executive Director of the non-profit.
