
A Volunteer at Preble Street Resource Center Pours Coffee This Morning for Clients on a To-Go Basis.

In order to accommodate the intent to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in Portland, Preble Street Resource Center began providing only food-to-go as of yesterday at noon for its clients.
Lunches were put into brown bags so clients will take meals with them and not eat in the Center to risk spreading COVID-19 across the Portland area. Meals in a brown bag are distributed three times a day for clients of Preble Street.
Last week fifty people were allowed into the dining room at a time to limit the contact and maintain social distancing which has been proven to contain the spread of COVID-19.
However, with so many private and public buildings shut down, clients of Preble Street have no where to go, especially to stay warm in the colder weather . “There is no where for us to go. Just the sidewalk,” said Arthur Rawding, whose family hails from Munjoy HIll. A friend of his added: “If we were asylum seekers looking for shelter, the city would open up the Expo to us.”
Managers at Hannaford Brothers, Forest Avenue, said today that the special early morning hours for seniors and those with compromised immune systems was enormously successful. This week the popular grocery/pharmacy store opened its doors from 6:00 am – 7;00 am on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. That program is expected to continue indefinitely.
