On Monday, June 29, 2026 at 8:49 PM., Portland Police responded to the intersection of St. John Street/Devonshire Street and Brighton Avenue for a report of a motor vehicle collision involving a bicycist.
The preliminary investigation determined that an 11 year old boy was riding his bike across Brighton Avenue when he was struck by a vehicle operated by Beder Hussein, 19, of Portland. The juvenile sustained a minor leg injury and was treated at the scene.
The investigation determined that Hussein had a green traffic signal at the time of the crash. Witnesses reported that he was talking on a handheld cell phone immediaely before the collision, which Hussein later confirmed. Officers also determined that Hussein’s driver’s license was suspended.
Hussein was charged with Operating After Suspension and Driving to Endanger.
