Police Make Arrest in November Death of Homeless Woman

On Friday, November 18, 2022, just after 7:30 am., the body of Bethany Kelley, a 23 year old homeless female from Portland, was found lying on the ground on Kennebec Street near Chestnut Street.  An autopsy confirmed that  her death was a ahomocide.  Detectives have been actively investigating this case since that day.

On Tuesday, February 21, 2023, Frederick Johnson, 40, of Portland, was arrested by Portland Detectives on a warrant charging him with the murder of Kelley.  Johnson was in custody at the Aroostook County Jail, Houlton, where he was being held on unrelated charges.

“The Portland Polce Department has investigated seven homicides since February 14, 2022 bringing six to closure with the arrests of nine individuals for these crimes,” said Interim Assistant Chief Robert Martin. “I would like to acknowledge he work by all of our dispatachers, officers, detectives, evidence technicians and support staff who put in countless hours invetigatint these crimes.  We hope that today’s arrest can give a step toward closure for Bethany’s family and we will continue  to support them through the process.
