New reporting revealed that since Roe v. Wade was overturned, Susan Collins skipped every Senate HELP committee hearing on abortion or reproductive healthcrare. Her decision to skip these hearings came after Collins cast the decisive vote to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court — a vote that helped pave the way for Roe v. Wade to be overturned and stripped millions of Americans of access to critical reproductive health care.
Graham Platner, candidate for US Senate running to unseat Collins, released the following statement in reponse:
“Thanks to Susan Collins’ decisive vote for Brett Kavanaugh the freedom to choose was stolen from millions of women. And in the years since Roe was overturned, Susan Collins has done everything she can to skirt responsibility and avoid accountability — from skipping hearings to avoiding town halls at all costs.
According to the “Maine Beacon”: “Senator Susan Collins has not attended any Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee meetings focused on abortion or reproductive healthcare after the US Supreme Court’s 2022 Dobbs decision overturning Roe v. Wade according to committee hearing reports. During the same period, Collins has highlighted her voting record, saying in a 2025 statement that “the people of Maine deserve a Senator who shows up to represent them every day.”
Collins missed hearings included a July 2022 hearing titled “Reproductive Care in a Post-Roe America: Barriers, Challenges and Threats to Women’s Health” and a June 2024 hearing examining how abortion bans created what lawmakers described as a “health care nightmare” across the country.”
Among the hearings Collins skipped were a 2024 hearing on the medical debt crisis in America, a 2023 hearing on the childcare crisis and a 2025 hearing focusing on lowering heatthcare costs. Collins addidtioally missed nearly half of HELP hearings related to healthcare issues more broadly, including hearing on substance use disorder treatment, diabetes and obesity.
