Maine First District Congresswoman Chellie Pingree released the following statement in response to Congressman Jared Golden’s, who represents Maine’s Second District, decision to not seek reelection.

“I want to thank my colleague, fellow Mainer, and friend, Congressman Golden for his years of service for Maine’s 2nd District.  I’ve always had the utmost respect for Jared’commitment, his work ethic and his dedication to the people of Maine.

It’s heartbreaking to know what he and his family have endured during the increasingly polarized and toxic political climate of our times.  Far too many elected officials have experienced threats and acts of violence and there is absolutely no place for that in our country.  Everyone who serves in elected office understands the toll that takes and I respect his decision to not seek another term.  Whatever he chooses to do next, I know he’ll bring the same passion and conviction he brought to his work in Congress.

Maine’s 2nd District is one of the toughest, most competitive seats in the nation.  But leaders like Jared — Mike Michaud before him — have proven that democrats can not only win there, but win consistently.  Whoever carries that mantle next, I look forward to supporting them — and workng closely with them to deliver real results for the people of Maine.

On behalf of my entire team, I want to extend my sincerest thanks and best wishes to Jared, his family and his dedicated staff.”

Congressman Golden’s announement came in an op-ed in The Bangor Daily News today.  He said that he has never loved politics, but found “pupose and meaning” in service to his constituents.  After 11 years as a legislator, he had gotten tired of the increasing “inciviiity and plain nastiness” that are more common from some elements of our society. He said that behavior is too often exhibited from “political leaders” as well.
