Late last week, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced that it is establishing a new office to expand engagement opportunities with agricultural and rural communities. Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D) Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Interior and Environment Subcommittee applauded the announcement and released the following statement:

“The creation of the first-ever EPA Office of Agriculture and Rural Affairs not only represents the Biden Administration’s commitment to protecting our environment, but shows this Administration understands that farmers are an integral part of the climate solution.  Having a dedicated office within the the EPA to collaborate with farmers and rural communities is essential, particularly as farmers in Maine and more across the country face challenges due to PFAS chemical contamination.  As a longtime farmer and someone who has been working to protect the environment and support rural communities for decades, I am encouraged that this new office will give agricultural and rural stakeholders a seat at the table as we work to ensure a sustainable future.”
