“Portland is such a quirky place that it’s easy for me to find beauty here,” said Adam Powers recently as he described his first solo photography exhibit currently at the Maine Jewish Museum through November 1, 2024.
A native of Orlando, Florida, Mr Powers received his MFA in Studio Arts from the Maine College of Art & Design in 2021 here in Portland. Following that milestone, he has happily settled into Portland rather than return to Florida. He loved the area immediately with so much natural beatuty. However, that scenic beauty has not been the focus of his camera lens.
The twenty-seven of his photographs in the exhibit are almost exclusively of walls – walls that have captured the fascination of Mr. Powers for years. “I’m fascinated by all the details of human intersection and nature on the built environment,’ he said yesterday while working at his part-time job at Moss Galleries on Munjoy Hill. “These are walls facing the public and that says a lot about people in their absence from them.”
Mounting his first solo exhibit has been a major undertaking for Mr. Powers. He selected the photographs to be in the exhibit from almost 2,000 photos he has taken over recent years. He mounted them and framed them himself. He joined the Bakery Photographic Collective earlier this year where most of his work was done. “I could not have mounted this show without this community run non-profit,” Mr. Powers said. HIs praise was high for the executive director of the non-profit.
The Maine Jewish Museum is open Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 12 – 4 pm. It is closed on Tuesday and Saturday. It is located at 267 Congress Street, Portland.
