Four years ago today, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, stripping away reproductive health care from millions of women. That decision was only possible because Senator Susan Collins cast the decisive vote to confirm Brett Kavanaugh after assuring Mainers that he viewed Roe as “settled law.”
This month, when Collins was asked whether she regrets that vote, she offered no remorse or empathy, saying “I do not regret that vote.” Pressed further on Fox News, she claimed Roe “would have been overturned” regardless “given the 6 – 3 vote.”
Actually, the Court overturned Roe v. Wade by a 5-4 vote; Chief Justice Roberts did not join in the majority, The Court upheld Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban by a 6-3 vote, with Kavanaugh in the majority both times – votes directly intended to erase reproductive freedom in America.
Without Kavanaugh, there would have been no majority to overturn Roe. That is the reality, no matter how Collins tries to spin it now.
Her vote for Kavanaugh was part of a broader pattern. Since confirming Kavanaugh in 2018, she has voted to confirm more than two dozen judges with records opposing abortioon rights. Just this month, she voted to confirm Katie Lane, who received a “no qualified’ rating from the American Bar Association and previously urged a state supreme court to eliminae constitutional protecions for abortion.
Platner has made clear the fight is bigger than one vote. “It’s not enough to just go back to Roe. We need to enshrine those rights in federal law forever and all time, to make sure we’re not just one bad judge away from seeing rights stripped from 26 million Americans.”
