Graham Platner leads Senator Susan Collins according to a New York Times/Portland Press Herald/Sienna University poll released this morning.  It is one of the first independent polls of Maine’s US Senate race conducted since Platner won the Democratic nomination on June 9, 2026.

Platner leads Collins 49% to 47% among likely voters, confirming that Maine’s US Senate race is one of the most competitive races in the country and that Mainers are ready for change.  The poll also makes clear that despite all the disractions, this race is about the issues.  After months of attacks and national media attention, Maine voters know where Graham stands — and they are backing him because of what he is fighting for.

Among Platner supporters, 93% say their vote for Graham is about where he stands on the issues.  More than 90% of likely voters said they had heard about the controversies surrounding Platner’s candidacy.  Platner leads Collins 50% to 43% on being an independent voice, a core tenet of Maine’s political identity.  Platner leads 50% to 46% on “doing what is best for ordinary Mainers.”

Tht is exactly why Republicans are desperate to make this race about anything other than Susan Collins’ record.  On the issues,  Collins has never been more vulnerable as voters see her old brand of independence as collapsing under the weight of her loyalty to  Donald Trump.

54% of Maine voters say Collins would be too supportive of Trump in the Senate including 57% of independent voters.  Trump remains deeply unpopular in Maine, with an approved rating of just 38% whlle 56% of voters say his policies have hurt the state.  61% say the country is on the wrong track.

In one of the first independent polls of this race, a five-term incumbent is trailing, underwater and too close to Donald Trump in the eyes of Mainers.  Meanwhile, Graham Platner leads a campagin that voters overwhelmingly say is about the issues that matter to their lives.
