The Legendary Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, 87, Who Died Yesterday of Cancer.  She was the Second Woman to be Named to the Supreme Court.

Governor Janet T. Mills, the first woman governor of Maine, ordered that United States and State of Maine flags be lowered to half-staff immediately until the internment of the legendary Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in a press release issued last night.  Ginsburg, a champion for women, died last night of cancer at the age of 87.

“I had the privilege of meeting Justice Ginsburg when I was Attorney General of Maine and I had the pleasure of watching people argue before her in the gallery of the highest court in the land.  She was a gracious, tenacious person with great intellect who was devoted to the integrity of the Court and to the rule of law as it applies to every person in our country.  She was one of the greatest Americans ever.  On behalf of the people of Maine, I express our deepest gratitude for her service to our nation and our heartfelt condolences to her family during this difficult time,” concluded the statement from Governor Mills issued last night.

“Tonight I join the nation in mourning the loss of a towering pioneer and progressive icon.  For nearly 30 years, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg served as a counterpoint on a Supreme Court long dominated by conservative jurists.  She was always a reliable voice for the downtrodden and disenfranchised and that’s why her passing feels so devastating to so many Americans.  She held the trust of countless women who admired her unwavering defense of reproductive rights and gender equality,” wrote US Rep. Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) in a press release issued last night.

“With less than two months until the election, the Senate should not confirm anyone for this seat until the voters have spoken.  Senate Republicans refused to consider President Obama’s nominee for the Supreme Court at the end of his presidency and President Trump should be given the exact same treatment,” concluded Congresswoman Pingree.

No press release on the passing of the legendary Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has been forthcoming from Portland’s Mayor Kate Snyder.  It’s not surprising since she didn’t issue a press release on the recent 100th Anniversary of Women’s Right to Vote.  These are major landmarks in women’s history in our nation. They are major landmarks in this nation’s history as well. They are worthy of a press release from Mayor Kate.  Mayor Kate is Mayor of Maine’s largest city.  She has a ready made platform and a responsibility to use it to celebrate historic occasions.  Rather she chooses to squander that platform. Where is she?  Maybe Mayor Kate is a Republican who supports Trumpy’s war on women.   Her silence speaks volumes.

Or maybe city manager Jon Jennings, her handler, forgot to tell her it was okay to issue a statement of respect over the passing of this great American woman.  Grace is not one of her attributes.
