The Maine State Library (MSL) has been forced to layoff employees because of a loss of federal funding according to Lori Fisher, the Maine State Librarian, in a press release issued recently.  A total of 8 staff were laid off with their last day on May 8, 2025.

Currentlly, the temporary location of the MSL is at 242 State Street has been closed  since April 11.  That has been necessary to deal with the layoffs process and staffing changes that have occurred.  It’s also in support of the Library’s long-planned move back into the renovated Cultural Building on the State House campus.

In order to ask a reference question or schedule a reference appointment, please use the Ask a  Librarian form on the MSL website. To ask about any other services, please call the library’s main phone number 207 – 287 – 5608.

The return of MSL’s 7 linear miles of collections back into the renovated Cultural Building will begin this summer.   A re-opening date for the Cultural Building, which houses the State Library, State Archives and State Museum, has not  been determined yet.
