Maine retirees and Social Security Administration employees, members of the American Federation of Government Employees Local 1164, held a press conference on Tuesday calling on Maine’s Congresional delegation to halt planned Social Security Administration plans to potentially close an office in Presque Isle and protect Social Security. Social Security Administration employees warned that the proposed cuts will harm the delivery of benefits to Maine people.
Billionaire Elon Musk and his DOGE team plan to eliminate at least 7,000 employees, 12% of the workforce, who process and provide social security benefits. Other reports suggest as much as half of Social Security Administrations are clted for the chopping block.
In a press release received today from Democracy Forward, it reported that yesterday a federal court decided that DOGE must delete and return every piece of data regarding individual Americans that are stored in the Social Security Administration. This includes bank account data, social security numbers, medical and mental health data, birth and mariage records and much, much more.
Today, Friday, the acting commissioner of the Social Security Administration, Leland Dudek, threatened to shut down the agency because of the ruling by the federal judge in the case. But the ruling has been clarified and Dudek has backed down from his threat to close down the agency. He was appointed to this spot by Convicted Felon Trump.
