Governor Janet T. Mills (D), Senate President Troy Jackson, and House Speaker Rachel T. Ross, yesterday introduced a bill that would make abortion legally accessible at any time during a pregnancy with a medical okay.
The Governor also announced she will light a candle in the windows of the Blaine House on Sunday, January 22nd. What would have been the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade – to shine a light on her continued commitment to protecting reproductive health care in Maine. The Governor encourages people across Maine to join her. in placing a lit candle in their windows.
The bill, sponsored by Senate President Troy Jackson and House Speaker Rachel T. Ross, both Democrats, was inspired by a Yarmouth resident Dana Pierce. Back in 2019, late in her second pregnancy she learned that her child was suffering from a rare genetic mutation from which the child would likely not survive. Maine abortion lawls prevented Pierce from an abortion here in Maine. Rather, she and her husband had to travel to Colorado for an abortion – away from family and friends.
“Governor’s bill seeks to ensure that no Maine person has to endure the……………..burden that Pierce did in order to receive medical are. The change makes clear that the decision about an abortion later in a pregnany will be made by qualified medical professionals in conjunction with their patient…..” according to a press released issued yesterday by the Governor’s office.
“The decision to have an abortion is deeply personal and as in Dana’a case can be hearbreaking. Fundamentally, these are decisions that should be made by a woman and her medical provider,” said Governor Janet T. Mills (D), the first woman governor of Maine. “Maine’s abortion laws are strong, but Dana’s painful experience shows us that there is more we can do to protect and support Maine people seeking abortion care. This bill removes barriers to care and makes clear that, in Maine, the decision to have an abortion is for a woman and her medeical provider to make.”
“Where do the Republicans stand on this bill?” asks munjoyhillnews.com. “Are you opposed to women having the right to make their own decisions on when to start a family? Should politicians make that decision for us?”
