“My favorite place to read in Portland is on a blanket on the grass under a tree on the Eastern Promenade overlooking Casco Bay and a handful of islands. When you get hungry, you can walk down to the food trucks, and when you get hot, you can venture a little farther down the hill to the beach and jump in the water. The feeling in your limbs will come back eventually, I promise,” wrote prominent Maine novelist LIly KIng in the centerfold of “The New York Times” Book Review today; Sunday, August 27, 2023.
Ms. King’s journey through the Portland and state’s literary destinations is a thorough and comprehensive trip – a good source of information for Maine residents as well as anyone traveling to the state in the near future. Unfortunately, from this blogger’s vantage point it is incomplete and consequently inaccurate.
Specifically the article does not mention the most popular, oldest and largest independent book stores in Maine. That of course is Sherman’s Maine Coast Book Shop.. Sherman’s has a huge inventory in each of its many stores across the state – making it very likely that some of the more obscure books in print will be found in its inventory – without making it necessary to special order books that small book stores such as PRINT would have to do in a similar situation. PRINT, the one store wonder, is co-owned by novelist Richard Russo’s daughter, Elizabeth. Josh Christie, a sometme writer for the “Portland Press Herald” is the other co-owner.
Another misstep from Ks. King was her failure to mention the first novel of writer Caitlin Shetterly, “Pete and Alice in Maine.” By the way it received an outstanding review in the same Times Book Review publication recently. Shetterly’s novel can be purchased at Sherman’s Maine Coast Books, 49 Exchange Street, Portland.
“I’m happy to hear that Lily KIng likes our food truck park here on Cutter Street. We can use all the publicity we can get,” said Gregory Mihols, owner of CARGO, one of the popular food trucks at the food park on Cutter Street. “The season has been up and down because of the poor weather.”
