Last night, Democratic nominee for US Senate Troy Jackson hosted his first town hall in Lewiston. In front of the crowd of over 300, Jackson directly answered questions from Mainers about the issues most important to them.
Jackson invited Senator Susan Collins to join him in Lewiston and saved a seat for her onstage, although she did not show up – contnuing her 25-year streak of avoiding public town halls.
“Events like these are exactly what this campaign is about — hearing from everday Mainers, sharing my record and promising to bring their voices and concerns to Washington where I’ll fight for them every single day,” said Jackson. “I’ll keep showing up and answering the tough questions and I hope after 25 years of hiding, Susan Collins can find it in herselt to do the same thing.”
The town hall in Lewiston was the first in a series of town halls and community conversations Jackson will hold with Mainers across the state in the coming weeks. Jackson will hold his nexttown halls Thursday in Gorham and Saturday in Jan, with additional events to be announced. Senator Collins is welcome at those, too.
Troy Jackson is a fifth-generation logger from Allagash and the former President of the Maine Senate. A lifelong advocate for labor and workng famlies, Jackson has spent his career fighting for a fairer, more affordable Maine. As Senate Prresident, he helped pass universal school meals, historic child care investments, a 12-week paid famly medical leave program and some of the strongest abortion protections in the country. He is running for the US Senate to ensure that the voices of everyday Mainers are heard in Washington.
Last March 15, this blogger called Senator Collins DC office to find out when she might be holding a town hall in the Portand area. Aiidan, a staff member who hails from Famouth, told this blogger that Senator Collins does not need to host town halls because she has access to the local newspaper. Furthermore, she prefers to meet with small, intimate groups of supporters in her DC office.
“Apparently Senator No-Show prefers to barricade herself from public scrutiny inside the protective pages of the “Republican Press Herald.” That’s because no one there will ask her the difficult questions or follow up questions for which she has no creditable answers,” charges this blogger.
Late this afternoon this blogger called the Senator’s DC office to urge her to attend one of Troy Jackson’s town halls later this week. The man who answered the phone said two things: First, he does not have a statement from the Senator on why she isn’t attending these town halls and that Aidan is no longer on the Senator’s Dc staff.
