Dr. Knight and Dr. Timothy Pritts at University of Cincinnati Medical Center  Press Conference on Damar Hamlin’s “Significant Progress” in the Last 24 Hours – This Afternoon.

“Did we win?”  – asked Damar Hamlin in a written statement yesterday when he woke up according to two doctors at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center at a press conference held this afternoon.  “Yes.  You won the game of life,” was the response from one of the doctors.  “That tells us that not only that the lights are on.  We know that he’s home,” said Dr. Pritts.  However, Hamlin was clearly referring to the Monday Night TV football game against the Bengals in which he suffered a cardiac arrest during a tackle he made on a member of the Bengals team.  The game was immediately suspended.

The two doctors took turns reporting on the Buffalo Bills safety’s condition, saying that during the last 24 hours, his condition has improved “substantially.”  He still has a breathiang tube down his throat so communication from him has been in writing. Hamlin also responded to commands from the doctors yesterday. Doctors and both  parents have described to him what happened at the Monday Night game which came as a surprise to him.  He has no recollection of his collapse on the field in the first quarter and  expressed “surprise” at the details – all in writing.

Doctors reported that his “neurological function is in tact.” The doctors praised the medical treatment Damar Hamlin received immediately following his collapse on the football field. Dr. Knight and Dr. Pritts said  the outcome could have been quite different had the response from the medical team on the field been “slower”.  When asked by a reporter if the doctors believed Hamlin could ever return to professional football, they answered that  it is “too early to tell.”  Hamlin still has “sigificant progress” to make the doctors said.

Hamlin needs to be breathing on his own which he is not yet, before he can be released from the hospital.

Cable news coverage of the press conference then ended abruptly and returned to the 8th ballot vote in which Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R) appears to have lost once again – in three days of voting for his coveted position as Speaker of the House.  If elected by fellow Republicans, he would succeed Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi (D) of California. That appears to be a big IF, however.
