Yesterday, the Department of Homeland Security announced it had expanded ICE operations in Maine.  Graham Platner released the following statement in response this morning:

“ICE murdered an American citizen two weeks ago.  Now they have come into our state to drag Mainers out of their homes and kidnap them off of our streets, based on nothing but racism and lies.  It is absolutely disgusting.

“This is not the time for our leaders to drag their feet or merely express their concern.  Simply saying we will fight back is not enough.  We need to actually fight back.  That means organizing  It means showing up in the streets.  It means holding ICE and this administrtion accountable.

“I’ve been incredibly inspired by what I have seen from Mainers who are showing up for our neighbors.  We — community groups, activists, Mainers — will be the bulwark against ICE.  If at times it feels that we are powerless — know that we are not when we fight back together.  I’ll be back in Maine Friday night and I’ll be in the streets with you on Saturday.”

Mr. Platner is the leading candidate for the US Senate from Maine to defeat incumbent Senator Susan Collins (R), 73.  Polls show that he’s  ahead of Collins by 44% to 40% acording to the Maine People’s Resource Center.   Mr. Platner, 41, leads Governor Janet T. Mills, 78,  who is running for the same US Senate seat by 53% to Mills’ 46%.  He’s endorsed by Bernie Sanders (I) of Vermont.
