Governor Mills’ Statement on Active Shooter in Lewiston With Twenty-two Dead and 50 – 60 Injured; Shooter at Large

Governor Janet T. Mills tonight released the following statement in response to an active shooter in Lewiston:

“I am aware of and have been briefed on the active shooter situation in Lewiston.  I urge all pepople in the area to follow the directions of State and local law enforcement.  I will continue to monitor the situation and remain in close contact with public safety officials.”

Twenty-two people are dead with 50 – 60 injured according to a television report at 10:00 pm this evening. The shootings occurred in two or three locations in the Lewiston area; a restaurant/bar and a bowling alley. Police are urging businesses to shut down and residents to lock down because the shooter is still at large.

Lewiston is about 36 miles north of Portland and is the second largest city in the state.  The population of Lewiston is around 40,000.  Portland is the largest city in the state.
