Yesterday Governor Janet T. Mills (D-ME) wrote to the Maine delegation expressing her concern about the 2025 Federal budget reconciliation bill that is now pending before the US Senate.  While some details are still being developed, Governor Mills said in her five page letter that this bill will have profoundly harmful consequences for Mainers.

Specifically, if enacted thousands of Maine people will lose health coverage, vulnerable rural hospitals will face increased financial pressure, families will lose access to healthy foods, the end of clean energy and energy efficiency tax credits will eliminate jobs and raise energy costs, and hard-working Maine people will continue to bear an unfair tax burden while the wealthiest Americans will receive a tax cut.

The Governor’s letter laid out in detail the impacts to Medicaid, impacts to Cover.ME.gov Marketplace, the risk of eliminating SNAP, the resulting increase in energy costs and its impact on undermining efficiency investments, and changes to Federal E-filing programs to Mainers if the so-called “Big Billionaires Bill” is passed.

The Governor concluded in the letter  that she does have deep concerns about the “significant impact this bill will have on the health and safety of Maine people, our state’s financial future and the stability of Maine’s economy.”

Yesterday Governor Mills completed the second leg of her three-day visit to Atlantic Canada focused on strengthening Maine’s historic relationship with Canada.  In Halifax, Governor Mills held bilateral talks with Nova Scotia’s Premier Tim Houston.  “Our historic bond with Nova Scotia and the Maritime Provinces is strong and I’m committed to making sure it endures through these challenging times for relations between our two countries,” said Governor Mills.  “Whether Maritimers come to Maine for work or pleasure, they will be welcomed warmly by the people of our state…………”  For more information on this trip, please read post herein dated June 24, 2025.

Earlier today, this blogger sent an email inquiry to Senator Susan Collins’ (R-ME) communications director in Washington, DC to see if she had a response to the Governor’s letter on the impacts of passage of the “Big Billionaires Bill” on Mainers. No response has been received from Kernen Blake, the Senator’s Communications Director in her DC office.  This blogger also called  the Senator’s DC office today, but was unable to break through the barrier of silence imposed on Maine voters trying to determine her views on important issues.  If you want to try to break through that sound barrier of silence that protects Senator Collins from her constituents,  please call Senator Collins’ DC office at:  202 – 224-2523.

This blogger has maintained a long list of questions for the Senator including:  How did her meeting with Secretary Kennedy go that she promised months ago, how is her fund raising going that she promised to initiate to replace NIH, what does she think of the way Senator Alex Padilla (D-CA) was treated during Secretary Noem’s press conference recently, what does she think about using the National Guard and the Marines to quell a non-violent protest in Los Angeles. Why doesn’t she hire someone qualified and skilled to answer her DC telephone on a full-time basis?   Apparently Senator Collins has no opinion on these matters or is tongue-tied – a sad state of affairs for Mainers.
