Governor Janet T. Mills (D) today announced that she fully supports a move by Maine’s Congressional Delegation to introduce legislation to block federal taxpayer funds from going to Monterey Bay Aquarium.  Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch recently “Red Listed” Maine’s lobster despite no scientific evidence that Maine’s lobster industry harms right whales.

“I fully support Senators Collins and King and Representatives Pingree and Golden in their effort to strip Federal funds from the Monterey Bay Aquarium,” said Governor Mills.

“Monterey Bay is jeopardizing the livelihoods of thousands of Maine people and a cornerstone of Maine’s economy.  In fact, Monterey Bay has completely ignored sound science and facts and has proven that they are not worthy of Federal funding, the Governor continued. “There must be consequences for their recklessness and their disregard for an industry that is at the heart of our state and our country — and this is a good step in that direction.”

Back on September 9, 2022, Governor Mills (D) and Senator Angus King (I) held a press conference on the Portland waterfront to pushback against the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch “Red Listing” of Maine lobster. Senator King called this recommendation “arrogant and irresponsible.”  He called it a stab in the back to Maine people and not backed up by evidence.
