“We just love the water,” said Scott Delone this afternoon at the outdoor park created by the EVO Food Truck on the Munjoy Hill waterfront.  Scott, Samantha Lee, his girlfriend, and John Rodriquez, his college roommate, were enjoying drinks at a picnic table wedged between SailMaine and Fore Points Marina.

John and Scott are on vacation from their jobs “running” oil from Alaska to west coast points for their employer ConocoPhillips in 1,000 foot tankers. The two are Merchant Marine Academy graduates. Samantha, “Sam” was formerly with Halliburton, where she worked as a petroleum engineer.  She lost her job in May because of the pandemic.  Sam plans to pursue a MBA.

John and Scott purchased the 43 ft. sailboat, Defiant,  this January from the Maine Maritime Academy. They are spending their vacation sailing along the coast of Maine.  Defiant was launched on June 1st in Rockport.

“I’ve never seen docks so well built and accessible,” said Scott.  “This is the best marina I’ve seen on the coast of Maine.”  They are leaving tomorrow morning for Monhegan Island and then a run up to the small and beautiful Roque Island –  halfway to Canada. There will be a return run back to Deer Isle where Scott’s family has a summer home.

Whiskey, the fourth passenger aboard the Defiant, goes ashore to use the restroom every morning and at night.  He likes to wedge himself behind one of us when the Defiant is heeled over and he goes right to sleep.  When we’re motoring, he runs all over the deck looking for birds, his favorite thing to chase wrote Sam in an email to mhn.com.  (See below photo of Whiskey).

“We love the feel of the ocean.  When I’m sailing on the Defiant I feel like a real sailor,” said John.  “Working on a tanker is a challenge on a daily basis using knowledge and work ethnic.  The other is pushing your will power.”  Scott echoed the feelings of his college buddy:  “We love the water.”

Just how long EVO X will maintain its presence in this  waterfront oasis is unclear at this time.  “It’s temporary,” said Casey Prentice, co-owner of Portland Foreside.  “We’ll have to see about it’s future.”  In the meantime, plans for the proposed Food Hall are on hold.  The reconstruction of building twelve is expected to resume in September or October.  The COVID-19 pandemic has delayed the plans for the redevelopment of this waterfront property.

EVO Food Truck is open every day from noon to 9:00 pm – serving lunch and dinner.  Bartender Brendan said there are three beers on tap, wine on tap and a full bar.  The Park can be accessed at a Portland Trails entry point.
