A parking lot off Cutter Street on the historic Eastern Promenade will site Carnaval Maine, the first major winter event to be held there in memory. The 3-day inaugural Carnaval is to be held from January 30 through February 2, 2020 according to a press release issued by the local Shamrock Sports & Entertainment in conjunction with two partners.
The festival, which also coincides with the 200th anniversary of the state of Maine, will include art installations, illumination shows, special igloo events, professional ice sculptors and much more – there is something for everyone. Bites and Brews will feature award-winning chefs and craft brewers together such as Allagash and Luke’s Lobster – two of the areas’s most popular that will surely delight the most discerning palates.
Improving the areas’s winter economy is part of the reason for this festival. In the 1920s, thousands of tourists came to Portland to enjoy its winter spectacle – a real boon to the local economy. Organizers are trying to duplicate that.
“We believe Carnaval Maine will be a new experience that will drive visitation and be an added boost to our winter economy.” said Steve Lyons, director of the Maine Office of Tourism. “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to provide support via our Presenting Partnership of Carnaval ME and specifically the illumination experiences. Winter is particularly magical with snow-filled landscapes and exciting activities. The Carnaval Illumination Experience will bring color and joy to the Promenade. We look forward to playing a role in making it a memorable event for our growing communities,” said Patricia Weigel, President and CEO of Norway Savings Bank.
