Commercial Street has just been picked as one of the country’s 10 great streets in the United States by the American Planning Association, in Washington, D.C.
It was chosen for this distinction because of its unique role in the city. It was so noted for its distintive character, strong sense of place and MIXTURE of uses including marine and fishing industries, tourism, retail trade, commerical offices and residential housing.
Built in the 1850s on top of old piers and fill dumped with Casco Bay, the street has evolved through the decades into an economic and financial center.
The APA made this announcement this morning to recognize and celebrate places that are enjoyable for people to work and live in.
