Student climate change strikes have been set for all over the state of Maine tomorrow, Friday, March 15, 2019 by organizers. The Portland student strike will occur on the city hall steps at 1:00 pm. The public is encouraged to attend and support them.

“These will be happening to protect how administrations in the US and all over the world are refusing to acknowledge that our generation’s future is imperiled due to climate denying,” said Anna Siegel, a local 7th grader leader in the climate change movement.

Inspired by Greta Thunberg, the Swedish teenager, tomorrow’s strike is part of a larger international day of strikes for climate.

“Adults keep saying. ‘We owe it to the young people to give them hope,” she said. “But I don’t want your hope. I don’t want you to be helpful. I want you to panic. I want you to feel the fear I feel every day. And then I want you to act,” said Thunberg in January at the World Economic Forum in Davos according to an editorial in THE NEW YORK TIMES on Wednesday, March 13, 2019.

Other Maine cities holding student climate change strikes include Brunswick, Lewiston, Bar Harbor and Scarborough.
