The public is invited to join Mayor Michael Brennan and City leaders at a candlelight remembrance in honor of Nelson Mandela. The remembrance will be held on Tuesday, December 10th from 5:00 – 5:30 pm at Monument Square, Portland. The purpose is to honor his life and legacy. Mandela died at the age of 95 on Thursday.
During the service which will include brief remarks, a remembrance ceremony, the South African National anthem and a poetry reading, Portlanders will be asked to light a candle in honor of the revered anti-apartheid leader who died last week.
“While this is not the only recognition of his life that the City will participate in,” said Maryor Brennan, “we do want to join the rest of the world in remembering and celebrating Nelson Mandela and the values he fought forl”
The Mayor and Portland Public School officials will also take this opportunity to announce an initiative that honors former President Mandela’s belief in the power of education.
