Last year Melissa and Matt Shaw weren’t in the Portland Flower Show. They learned, though, last fall that several exhibitors weren’t returning this year, so they registered. And the young couple won two awards on opening night – Wednesday evening. One award was for The First Timers Award and the other the Pallette Award.
“We were surprised and excited,” said Melissa of their awards. They used 75 geraniums and 100 senetti pericallis in their exhibit. “It took lots of planning. We began last September,” said Matt. During this show, Matt has received a lot of interest in the pergola seen in the above photo. He custom makes them for customers. He has been in the landscape business for 10 years. Their business is Picture Perfect Landscapes, Bowdoinham.
“Whether or not we return next year depends on the economy and how much business this exposure generates for us,” said Meliss. “We primarily wanted the exposure, but did not expect to win the two awards.”
The couple attended the University of Maine. Melissa earned a B.S. in animal science and Matt a B.S. in landscape horticulture. She works full-time as a vet tech at Freeport Vet. Hospital. They have one child and are expecting a second in May.
“We missed attending last year, but this year we are fortunate enough to come back. We love it here,” said Dale Techer, Ossipee, NH. She and her husband David were taking an afternoon break in the Food Court on Thursday afternoon. They are vegetable growers. Jean McGinn, said: “It’s uplifts your spirits to come to this event on a beautiful day.”
The show is open today until 7 PM and tomorrow Sunday, the last day, from 10 am – 5 pm.
