A Large White Tent Has Been Erected in a Secure Area Between Casco Bay and Ocean Gateway for Use in the National Governors Association Annual Summer Meeting This Week. Guests Will be Able to go to the Rooftop of the Nearby WEX Building Later This Evening. (Hopefully This Tent Site Does Not Come Under the City’s Ordinance Described Herein. Wouldn’t That be Embarassing if it Did)?
“By City ordinance, camping is not permitted on public property. City staff will continue to enforce these ordinances consistently and fairly in all public areas, including streets, sidewalks and parks in accordance with our recently-adopted policy,” said Interim City Manager Danielle West, in a press release issued late this afternoon.
The recently adopted city of Portland staff policy specifically describes how staff engages with unauthorized campsites. This policy was developed to improve access to services for individuals experiencing homelessness, ensure they will be treated with dignity throughout the enforcement process and allow for flexbility in response to capacity at area emergency shelters the press release ended.
“Governors: Tear down your tent. Scram!.”
