Nathan Soucy, owner/stylist of the new barbershop on India Street has taken an old fashioned idea and turned it into a modern day barbershop. They are becoming extinct in Maine, said Soucy, earlier this week at his new shop across from Amato’s. There is definitely a need in Portland for a place where men can go and have their hair cut without being surrounded by women having their hair cut as well.
For a long time, Soucy had wanted to open his own barbership. In late June, he was at Amatos and saw that this former artist’s studio was for rent. The owner of the building showed it to him and by July 8th he’d begun to rennovate it. He opened the doors on August 25th. The decor is black and gray with the plushest, black leather chairs that MHN.com has ever sat in. There was a nice breeze coming in the front door – it has all the ingredients it needs to make it a very welcoming place for customers. Photographs on the plain walls are by Stephanie Hatsenbueller, a local photographer.
In the chair having his hair cut when MHN.com arrived, was Hill resident Crandall Toothaker. He had stopped in because he’s always curious about new businesses on the Hill. “I want all the businesses on the HIll to be very successful,” said Toothaker. Pleased with his haircut, he said he’d be back as he left the shop. He gave Soucy two thumbs up!
Eventually, Soucy, (see above photo), would like to have a full service mens’ salon – a salon that carries great hair products and addresses hair loss issues. He’s created a place where men can go to get their hair colored and eyebrows waxed without having to go into a salon composed mostly of women. And most men would probably say – that’s a good thing!
“Cuts for Men” is open Tuesday – Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm. Saturday from 9 am to noon and after 5 pm by appointment. For more information, please call Soucy at 207 478-0189.
