A new poll out this week emphasizes what voters have indicated in elections across the country over the past two years according to a press release issued by Planned Parenthood this morning. Abortion is a top motivating issue particularly among women of all ages, races and enthnicities. The poll released by KFF Survey of Women Voters on Monday, shows that abortion is now the top issue for women under 30. Two-thirds of women of all ages surveyed said they believe this election will have a “major” impact on abortion access.
Survey respondents also indicated they will not be fooled by softened rhetoric from abortion opponents, mainly Republicans, who have shifted their messaging after voters overwhelmingly demonstrated support for abortion access in the two years following the US Supreme Court’s ruling that reversed federal protections for abortion.
Most respondents of the KFF Survey believe Donald T rump would sign a law banning abortion, a view consistent with the former president having bragtgted about his role in overturning Roe v .Wade and his running mate JD Vance’s assertion that a new Trump Administration would defund Planned Parenthood.
In Maine, the Republican party platform opposes abortion, marriage equality for LBTG+ families and “promoting” certain types of gender affirming health care in schools. And while most anti-abortion candidates for state legislature have largely neglected the issue in their campagin messaging, dozens of these candidates’ voting records prove how disconnected these politicans are from the will of voters locally and nationwide.
Mainers elected a pro-reproductie rights majorityto the statehouse in the November 22 election, and those lawmakers acted to protect and expand access to abortion and related care. In June, primary voters in Waterville ousted an anti-abortion Democrat in favor of a challenger who promises to protect reproductive rights in the state.
“Anti-abortion politicans have proven time and again that they won’t stop attacking their constituents’ basic health care including abaortion. But voters are motivated to protect our right to abaortions and related care, polling as well as election results here and across the country continue to show this,” said Lisa Margulies, Esq, Vice President of Public Affairs, Planned Parenthood Maine Action Fund.
Ms. Margulies continued: “No politician is more qualitied to make decisions about pregnancy then patients and their medical providers. Last legislative session, certain politicians denied Mainers the opportunity to vote on a constitutional amendment to protect reproductive autonomy. These politicans cannot deny Maine voters the right to elect leaders we can trust with our reproductive liberty………………………………….. This November Mainers again have the opportunity to vote our values and cast ballots for candidates we can trust to safeguard the protections we now have in place, stand strong against ongoing attacks and prioritize not only abortion care , but all family planning services in our state now and into the future.”
