Wilde Chapel at Evergreen Cemetery on Stevens Avenue. It’s Personal Because This is Where my Grandfather’s Service was Held in 1961 Before His burial at Evergreen; Crawford A. Peffer Founder and Manager of “Redpath Chautauqua of New York and New England.”

You are invited to attend the  Twelfth Annual Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 26, 2025.  The parade begins at 2:00 pm at Longfellow Elementary School, 432 Stevens Avenue and proceeds down Stevens Avenue until it reaches  Evergreen Cemetery, at 672 Stevens Avenue.

At the cemetery, a commemoration will be held in front of the Wilde Chapel in the white tent erected on the cemetery property.  The event is hosted by the Deering Center Neighborhood Association.

Stevens Avenue will be closed at 1:45 pm for the Parade.  So in order to find parking in the area, please arrive by 1:30 pm.  Speaking a the Cemetery ceremony will be Retired Army Colonel MIchael Birmingham.  His wife Army Capain Teresa Birmingham will read by a poem “Absolution” by Siegfred Sassoon.  Tom Dyhrberg will sing “Where Have All the Flower Gone?”

Some of those participating in the Parade include:   the Girl Scouts, the Boy Scouts, the Claddagh Mohr Pipe Band, a Riderless Horse, the Department of Corrections Honor Guard, children carrying flowers and many others.

The organizer of the event is Bobbi Cope, a long-time resident of Portand.
